Choice Photography - a personal selection and commentary by the Gib

Having been putting a camera up to my eye or my eyeglasses since the 60s I now spend time looking around on the web to find photography and photographic information that delights my appetite for the result of careful viewing of the planet and its inhabitants. And man, is that a load of fun.

mourning the loss of King

It has beena couple of weeks and I am still mourning the loss of King, my Pentax K10d. It happened on one of those too busy days when  was in and out of ten different places and he got left behind in my 57 year old haste and distractability.   Or I left the car unlocked and someone spotted him on the floor of the back seat and tried the door. I do hope he finds a good home.  He was wearing my Pentax DA 18-55mm (first version ) lens that I paid just $99 for.  No photos were lost. King was a good camera and I will miss him.

I will miss you old buddy.  You and your weather seals.

the long view

Althought part of my reason for buying the Pentax was its ability to use old manual focus lenses I have found myself using almost exclusively the FA 28-80 f3.5/4.5 lens. Not terribly wide but very useful for general purpose photography.  Some days it does seem a heavy rig to tote, in which case I will take my tiny Sony or my Nikon Coolpix, especially if I have no specific plans to shoot and am just taking a camera along in case a UFO lands beside my car.

about the Pentax K10D

purchased one of these and am getting used to it.... a heavy solid DSLR, very similar in feel to my old PZ-1...I have been mainly shooting in jpeg format to begin with.  Using some old lenses of mine from previous Pentax bodies: FA 28-80  and 100-300, a manual 50mm f1.4 M lens and a Vivitar 19-28mm zoom lens.

I like the camera enormously. More comments to come.

Pentax has a new photo gallery

Pentax has a new online photo gallery and it is spectacular.  Lots of incredible images. Lots of ways to filter and view (by camera model among others). Check it out but be ready to pop your eyes back in.

winter is fully engaged

Lots and lots of snow, forecasters keep thumbing through their thesauri looking for new terms: flurries, snow squalls, light snow, flurries heavy at times, snow, etc.

I tend not to take the digicam out in such anti-electronic weather - I may take out one of my old film SLRs, a Pentax Spotmatic or maybe a Nikon (FM or FM2) and may go with an extreme wide angle lens (20mm Carl Zeiss Flektagon M42 mount or an old Nikkor 20mm f4 AI'd lens) or maybe 35mm angle of view, hard to beat a Super Takumar 35mm f3.5 lens for quality and the Nikkor AI 35mm f2 is no slouch either.

I will be adding +1 f stop at least in exposure for all the whiteness that has piled up.

Old but still high quality - Pentax 35mm film SLR cameras

Digital cameras are taking over but for a small investment perhaps $75 you can purchase a Pentax SLR and lens and take some wonderful photographs. eBay is the place to look for current prices. Pentax lenses for these models are referred to as "screwmount" or "M42".  A 200mm f4 lens can be had for around $100. There are many bargains to be had. These lenses are of equal optical quality to the lenses of today and may surpass some of the "kit" lenses sold today. With an adapter, you can use these lenses on Pentax DSLR cameras with some reduced functionality. These metal constructed optical wonders are still very useful.
